March 2 is Read Across America Day! Celebrate with These Local Children’s Authors

Read Across America Day will be celebrated on March 2 - Dr. Seuss’ birthday. This holiday is a great chance for parents and teachers to show kids how rewarding and fun it can be to pick up a book.
 
Did you know that many famous children’s authors are from Long Island? If you’re looking to introduce your child to a new author or illustrator, consider one from our area. They have all written and illustrated for several different books, so be sure to check out a few of their books.

Susan Abrahams
Raised in Great Neck, Abrahams still lives in her home town with her husband. She was a teacher for 22 years, and her first published book is titled Hal, the Hamptons Hound and the Case of the Missing Puppies. Abrahams is currently working on a sequel to this book.
 
Yvonne Capitelli
Capitelli was raised on Long Island, and as a young girl she said she always envisioned herself as a children’s author. She has written several books, all if which focus on helping children build character. Capitelli has won nine awards for her works.
 
Diana Ting Delosh
This author and illustrator is from Huntington. She has won several awards, and has written and/or illustrated for such books as Once Upon a Midnight, An Armful of Acorns and The Greedy Ant Eater.
 
Brian Heinz
Heinz lives in Wading River, and has written many children's books - most of which concentrate of animals and wildlife. Heinz travels the world to research for his works, and the result is such works as Nanuk: Lord of the Ice, The Alley Cat and Cheyenne Medicine Hat.
 
Tom Gahan
Here’s an author that likes to incorporate the history of Long Island into his work. His latest novel, Harmony Bay, is required reading at several Long Island high schools.
