Riverhead – Science, History and Water x Two

Written by museums  |  20. February 2003

Planning a trip to Riverhead should include a big block of time - it has so much to offer! The oldest 'kid on the block' is the Suffolk County Historical Society, located on Main Street (Route 25A). "Founded in 1886 to collect, preserve and interpret the ongoing history of Suffolk County, the Suffolk County Historical Society houses a unique collection of artifacts reflecting more than three centuries of change. Step back in time and sail with sea captains to distant shores. Explore the culture of Algonquin people and their relationship with the European settlers. See the furniture, tools and personal belongings that were part of the everyday lives of Suffolk's pioneers. Research your family, church, village or town in the library and archival collections with the help of the library staff. A few hours here will lead you through Suffolk County's rich and colorful past. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. admission is free, however donations are welcome." 631-727-2881 A newcomer is the LI ScienCenter, a hands-on science museum that boasts some really neat exhibits and programs. The science museum migrated from Shoreham Wading River where it was known as the North Shore Science and Technology Center. Executive Director, Delia Gibbs brings a raft of science exhibits and programs among them, Magnets, Dig It, Geology, Ancient Egypt and Germs. LISC offers Science in your Classroom, Museum Tours, Mommy and Me, Pre-School Science, Girl and Boy Scout Science Achievement, Saturday Science Specials, Science Birthdays and an Adult Lecture Series. LISC also hosts across LI a special summer hands-on experience called Camp InventionTM, a creativity and discovery program, for children grades 2-6, where a child's imagination can run wild. LI ScienCenter is open on Sundays from 12 noon to 4:00pm or by appointment. A $2 donation per child is suggested. Call for information and specials. 631-208-8000 or visit our web site www.lisciencenter.org Give it a try! Two water attractions also draw people to Riverhead Splish Splash (visit when the weather is warmer!) and Atlantis Marine World located on Main Street in Riverhead. " Atlantis Marine World, situated along the Peconic River, boasts many fascinating Marine Life Exhibits, Sea Lion Shows, Educational Programs and even a Submarine Simulator Ride. Visitors to Atlantis Marine World will be greeted by frolicking seals and can explore the mystical Lost City of Atlantis while discovering the many underwater wonders of King Poseidon's Ancient Ruins. During your visit, don't miss the opportunity to jump aboard the Atlantis Explorer for an environmental tour boat adventure, offering you an exciting and educational experience you will never forget."
