The Long Island Pet Expo Comes to Town March 3-4

Written by Hannah M.  |  15. February 2012

The Long Island Pet Expo comes but once a year. Vendors from all over Long Island set up shop in the Expo Center at Suffolk Community College, peddling their pet services to over 20,000 of the local animal lovers in attendance. But the Pet Expo isn’t just about consumerism. It’s also about education and entertainment. The exhibits and attractions give attendees hands on interaction with some animals that the average person might not come across. Alpacas, potbellied pigs, reptiles, birds of prey, you’ll find them all at the Expo plus your commonly domesticated friends, cat and dog. Many of the exhibits provide children with the understanding that owning a pet means commitment and responsibility.

Check out the K-9 dog show where dogs perform for the audience as they run, jump and retrieve, showing off their obedient and playful nature. Golden retrievers do free style “dance” moves timed to music with trainer Diana Frohman. And don’t miss Jilli Dog, “The World’s Only Poker-Playng Dog.” The Expo gets catty with the International Cat Association Cat Show where felines are judged and ranked, like a Westminster for cats you could say. Illusion Ranch alpacas make a visit to the Expo’s petting zoo where visitors can pet adult and baby alpacas. Alpacas are a calm animal originating in South American but these specific alpacas travel from a land called Pennsylvania. It’s told that they have the softest fleece in the world.

In short, the Long Island Pet Expo is a memorable two-day experience that will be fun for visitors of all ages and a must-see event for any animal lover.
