Senator Martinez: $26.4 Million Dollars to be Diverted to Expansion of Oakdale Sewers
Oakdale, NY - February 11, 2019 - On February 8th, 2019, Senator Monica R. Martinez attended the Regional State of Long Island address where Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that he would be redirecting federal and state funding to expand the current sewer systems in Oakdale.
The $26.4 million, previously dedicated to Great River, was voted down in a public referendum in January. As a direct result of Senator Martinez and her tireless advocacy for this project, this funding will work to connect 400 additional homes in the area she represents that currently depend on antiquated septic systems, and will hopefully reduce nitrogen loading into the Great South Bay.
Suffolk County will manage this project, and the funds will cover planning and implementation of this project. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2020.
Together with the Mastic, Babylon, and Patchogue projects, this will be the largest expansion of a sewer system in Suffolk County since the 1970’s. The project may be subject to an additional vote by the residents of this area.
