Oceanside residents woke up to water service problems Sunday after a water main ruptured during the early-morning freeze, according to Liberty Water.
Company officials said a main beneath Waukena Avenue split at about 1 a.m., sending water into the street between Long Beach Road and Oceanside Road. Crews were dispatched overnight to shut off the flow and begin repairs in the residential stretch.
The break is being linked to the bitter temperatures that moved across Nassau County this weekend. Sudden drops in temperature can cause aging underground pipes to contract and crack, a recurring winter issue on Long Island from Oceanside and Rockville Centre to parts of Suffolk.
Drivers in the area faced lane closures and icy patches Sunday morning as water on the roadway quickly froze. Liberty Water urged motorists to use caution near the work zone and to plan alternate routes while repairs continue.
While Liberty Water did not immediately detail how many customers lost service, some homes and businesses in the immediate area may have experienced low water pressure or temporary shutoffs while crews isolated the damaged section.
Water main breaks are a familiar winter headache for Long Islanders, particularly in South Shore communities where aging infrastructure runs under heavily traveled roads. Officials typically recommend that residents report any sudden loss of pressure, discolored water, or visible street flooding as soon as they notice it.
Liberty Water said it would restore full service as quickly as possible and monitor the line after repairs, reminding Oceanside customers to check for cloudy or discolored water once service is back and to let the tap run briefly if needed.
Local officials also used the incident as a reminder that as cold snaps continue, more main breaks are possible across Nassau and Suffolk counties, and that drivers and pedestrians should be alert for emergency roadwork and icy conditions around active repair sites.
