Hot Spots: Weekly Watch for February 4 through February 7

This week is packed with entertainment and activities honoring and celebrating special occasions and events: Black History Month, Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day. On Monday, check out the drama Running Scared, Running Free at Stony Brook Village Center and Black History Month at Nissequogue River State Park. On Tuesday, several public libraries are hosting special food related events, including Easy Chinese Cooking at Huntington Public Library and Valentine Cake Creation at West Babylon Library. On Wednesday, there’s a craft and gift fair taking place at Broadway Mall and its Ladies Night at The All Stars. On Thursday, celebrate Black History Month at Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park. Seaford Public Library is also hosting a session on making cheesecake filled chocolate covered strawberries. Check out the details below!

MONDAY – FEBRUARY 4, 2013

Who: Running Scared, Running Free At Stony Brook Village Center
Info: Running Scared, Running Free is a St. George Production hosted by WMHO. It’s a drama showing the link between Long Island’s Native American tribes and the Underground Railroad as well as secret codes hidden in quilts. It is based on oral history from a local Native American clan. Today is its matinee performance for the general public. It’ll include dessert such as Northern Apple Pie and Tea and Robert E. Lee’s Orange Pie and Tea. It continues to play these dates: Feb 6, 12, 14, 25 and 27.

Who: Black History Month At Nissequogue River State Park
Info: In honor of Black History Month, every weekday throughout the month of February, the park will have displays of paintings from America’s great black artists and posters saluting black pioneers, abolitionists, educators, scientists, ecologists and horticulturists. Celebrations are held in the main office.

TUESDAY – FEBRUARY 5, 2013

Who: Easy Chinese Cooking At Huntington Public Library
Info: If you love Chinese food, here’s your chance to learn how to make simple and healthy Chinese dishes, including Pepper Steak, Chicken with Green Beans and Vegetables Mei Fun. The session will be led by Penn Hongthong. Register in advance.

Who: Valentine Cake Creation At West Babylon Library
Info: Looking to make this Valentine’s Day special? Learn how you can turn an ordinary cake into a Valentine delight using buttercream, pastry bags and fondant.

Who: Broadway Mall Craft and Gift Fair At Broadway Mall
Info: This is the start of a five-day fair presented by Peer Promotions. There will be vendors with beautiful gifts and other unique items.

Who: Ladies Night At The All Stars
Info: The All Stars offers food, glow-in-the-dark bowling and interactive arcade games. Stop by tonight and ladies can enjoy drink specials and $5 games. Ladies Night happens every Wednesday at The All Stars.

THURSDAY – FEBRUARY 7, 2013

Who: Black History Month At Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park
Info: To celebrate Black History Month, there will be displays of paintings from some of America’s great black artists and posters saluting black pioneers, scientists, abolitionists, educators, ecologists and horticulturalists at the Manor House. All is available for viewing through the end of the month every Tuesday to Sunday.

Who: Cheesecake Filled Chocolate Covered Strawberries At Seaford Public Library
Info: Get ready to make some delicious treats with a baking coach that’s right in time for Valentine’s Day. There’ll be chocolate, cheesecake and strawberries involved
