Written by Fran  |  25. January 2011

Nearly 900 students enrolled in Eastern Suffolk BOCES Career and Technical Education programs from component school districts including Bay Shore UFSD, Rocky Point UFSD, Sachem CSD, and William Floyd UFSD recently participated in the Beyond BOCES: College and Technical Training Fair held at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue. Students enrolled in various career and technical programs throughout ESBOCES from the Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC), Edward J. Milliken Technical Center (MTC), the Harry B. Ward Technical and Academic Center (WTAC), and the Suffolk Aviation Academy (SAA), had the opportunity to speak with representatives from approximately 30 colleges, vocations, technical institutes, and the armed services about career paths available to them. "This fair is important because it allows students to have more interaction with post-secondary institutions in a smaller forum and get a more personal touch," said Dean T. Lucera, director of Career, Technical, and Adult Education at ESBOCES. "This opportunity may not be available to them in their home districts." Joseph Delgado, principal of SAA, noted that the fair assists students with the transition process as they graduate high school and plan for their futures. SAA students were able to learn about opportunities available for pursuing a career as an aviation airframe mechanic or a pilot. Representatives were also available to discuss career possibilities in animal science; art; design and visual communications; audio technology; automotive technology; auto body repair; carpentry; certified personal trainer; clinical medical assisting; computer services; computer technology; cosmetology; culinary arts; dental assisting; early childhood education; fashion merchandising; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; law enforcement; marine and outdoor power equipment; motorcycle technology; nurse assisting; pharmacy technician; plumbing and heating; practical nursing; professional photography; technical, theatre and the performing arts; television, video and digital film production; trade electricity and welding.
