The William Floyd High School boys’ varsity track team, under the leadership of head coach Ed Noll, has clinched the League I winter track championship! Coach Noll described this accomplishment as a “total team effort,” in which all competitors contributed to securing the team win and the overall title.

The meet, which became the closest win in league championship history, ended in dramatic fashion. Trailing by 5.5 points heading into the final event, the Colonials needed six points or a third-place finish or better to secure the title – and they got it – finishing third in the 4x800m relay to take home the championship with a half-point victory.

The Colonials’ distance runners contributed greatly with Vidal Macchia taking third in the two mile and fourth in the 1000m. Holden Lentini and Duncan Mahnken finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 1600m. William Floyd’s sprinters and jumpers also put forth amazing performances. Zavier Jenkins finished second in the 300m and the 55m, proving his worthiness for the top 50 preseason runners list.

Christian Hobson also had a strong day taking fourth in the 55m, second in the long jump and second in the high jump, picking up big team points. Temarr Burwell took third in the high jump and Isaiah Taylor placed in the high jump to pick up points for the Colonials. William Floyd scored points in all three relays to secure the win and take home the League I championship title.

“Winter track is an absolute grind being outside training in the elements and toughing it out through those cold days,” said Coach Noll. “The boys remain focused and steadfast throughout the season to do what needed to be done, to work hard and earn the title as league champions.”

The season continues with county championships and the state meet qualifiers in the coming weeks.

Congratulations, Colonials! Good luck the rest of the season!
