A new National Weather Service snowfall projection released Sunday morning (January 18) shows snow totals ticking up across the tri-state area as the system pushes through today and into tonight.
What Long Island can expect
For Long Islanders, the latest projection keeps the highest totals just north and west of the city, but parts of Nassau and Suffolk are still in line for a few inches—enough to make roads slick fast, especially during heavier bursts.
Projected Long Island totals highlighted in the update:
-
Syosset: ~3.7"
-
Islip: ~2.5"
-
Westhampton: ~3.6"
-
Montauk: ~3.0"
Timing: When it hits, when it ends
Forecasters expect snow to continue across the region through Sunday evening, with the storm tapering late tonight and ending early Monday (January 19). Conditions should improve during the day Monday (MLK Day).
What could make it worse (or better)
The NWS briefing notes that snow bands could briefly intensify snowfall rates, cutting visibility and making travel conditions deteriorate quickly—even if totals don’t look huge on paper.
Heads-up for travel
Even a few inches can snarl:
-
Evening driving (slippery roads + reduced visibility)
-
Airport plans (allow extra time and watch for delays)
Check local alerts and updates before heading out, and give plows/crews space if you’re on the roads.
