Alzheimer's Association Long Island President and Chairman of the Board Mel Mullin, along with his wife, Denise Mullin, will be hosting a Valentine's Day weekend brunch and a very special concert and art exhibit to benefit the mission of the Alzheimer's Association. The event will be held on Sunday, February 12th from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 18 Winchester Drive in Muttontown. The concert features a performance by violinist Lisa Uckardes, who will be accompanied by concert pianist Gary Klein. A Long Island resident, Ms. Uckardes is the concertmistress of the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra and the Nassau County Community College Symphony Orchestra. She is also the string director of the North Bellmore School District. Mr. Klein has performed in more than 800 concerts as both a soloist and chamber player since arriving on the New York scene in 1972. In 1981, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall, which earned him a standing ovation. Mr. Klein also maintains a private teaching practice and is a member of the C.W. Post College piano faculty. Currently, 5.4 million people in this country have Alzheimer's disease and more than 60,000 of them reside on Long Island. By the middle of this century, it is estimated that approximately 14-16 million people will have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease; 1 out of 8 baby boomers is at risk.
