What to Do with Those Broken or Unwanted Holiday Lights?

Written by Hank Russell  |  11. January 2012

Now that the holidays are over, Gershow Recycling is reminding people to bring their broken, unwanted or outdated holiday lighting to any of its eight locations: Brooklyn, New Hyde Park, Valley Stream, Freeport, Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, Bay Shore and Medford. By bringing their unwanted holiday lighting to Gershow, they will not only get money for it, but they will help preserve the environment by keeping scrap out of landfills. In addition, Congress passed a law that, effective January 1, 2012, traditional incandescent lighting will be phased out in favor of other light bulbs that use at least 25% less energy. Incandescent lights use more energy than modern LED lighting and may cause a fire hazard if the wires are frayed or become worn out after years of use. It is imperative to inspect all wiring to make sure there is no exposed wiring and that all lights are functional. "Many people have old holiday lighting lying around that is no longer energy-efficient or safe or has outlived its use," said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling. "They can bring their lighting to Gershow for cash, put money in their pockets and, in turn, help stimulate the local economy as well as protect the environment." Gershow Recycling takes aluminum, brass, copper, steel, cast iron, appliances, cars and vehicles. In keeping with its philosophy of "Conserving the Future by Recycling the Past," Gershow Recycling purchases scrap metal that would have otherwise wound up in local landfills, and turns them into high-quality scrap products for recycling. The company recycles both ferrous and non-ferrous products. For more information, visit www.gershow.com or, for pricing, call 1 (855) GERSHOW (437-7469). Now with the second generation carrying on the legacy, Gershow generates over 750 jobs, contributing millions of dollars to the local economy, while helping to preserve Long Island's environment.
