Macy’s is trimming its footprint again.

The department-store chain says it will close 14 locations across 12 states as part of its ongoing turnaround plan, “Bold New Chapter,” which is aimed at concentrating investment in stronger stores and expanding newer formats.

The key detail for New Yorkers (and Long Islanders)

On the current list, only one Macy’s in New York State is slated to close: Macy’s at Boulevard Mall in Amherst (Western New York).
No Long Island Macy’s locations appear on this 14-store closure list.

When will these stores close?

  • Clearance/liquidation sales are expected to start in mid-January 2026 and run for about 10 weeks, according to the company’s guidance shared with Axios.

  • Most of the 14 locations are expected to close in Q1 2026, while the Amherst, NY store is reported by Retail Dive as closing later (mid-year).

Why Macy’s says it’s doing this

Macy’s leadership has framed the closures as “targeted” moves to exit underperforming locations and reinvest in stores and capabilities that are working—especially store upgrades and digital improvements. In a public memo, CEO Tony Spring wrote that the company is “closing underproductive stores” and providing support for affected employees, including transfers where possible and severance/outplacement resources.

This latest round also fits into the bigger plan Macy’s announced previously: closing about 150 stores by the end of 2026 while focusing on roughly 350 “go-forward” Macy’s locations.

What Long Island shoppers should watch for

Even though Long Island stores aren’t on this specific list, this announcement is a reminder that Macy’s is still actively reshaping its store network through 2026.

If you’re a frequent Macy’s shopper, a few practical tips:

  • Treat closure sales as “all sales final” until proven otherwise—liquidation events often come with tighter return rules posted in-store.

  • Use gift cards sooner rather than later if you shop at a location that’s closing (policies vary during wind-down periods).

  • If you’re traveling upstate or out of state, check the Macy’s store locator before making a special trip, since closure notices can appear there first.
