Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island: Over 70 Members Strong

A little less than a year ago I wrote about the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island: The New Group In Town. At that time we were approaching our thirtieth member (https://experts.longisland.com/veterans/archive_article.php?ExpArtID=3043 and https://experts.longisland.com/veterans/archive_article.php?ExpArtID=3036). We now have over 70 members and are still growing. "You Served Your Country " Now Let Your Community Support You" The Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island is comprised of representatives from state and county government, the VA, veterans organizations, mental health and substance abuse providers, universities, business and individual veterans, who all have a personal interest in supporting Long Island veterans. The mission of the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island is to: Promote the health and well-being of Long Island veterans and their families through advocacy, and a broad array of services. A wide range of services and supports are available to veterans from all generations. Veterans may seek services from the VA in Northport, as well as from providers in their local community. Some services are free. Others may be covered by private insurance, TRICARE, government benefits, or other forms of payment. VA MEDICAL CENTER (Northport) The VA in Northport offers a wide range of health, mental health, dental, rehabilitation, employment, substance abuse, pharmacy, aging and women's services. Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) have a five year window of eligibility to register. Veterans from every generation are always encouraged to register with the VA. AGENT ORANGE EXPOSURE: AGENT ORANGE REGISTRY (VA, Northport) (631) 261-4400 ext. 2657 or 2659 - Vietnam Veterans exposed to Agent Orange may develop medical conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, Prostrate Cancer, Lung Cancer and other illnesses. These veterans are entitled to a free medical screening. Those found to have a service connected illness are entitled to prompt medical care and monthly tax-free compensation. EDUCATIONAL SERVICES: NOTE: As of July 1, 2008, New York State is offering Veterans Tuition Awards to all combat veterans dating back to February 28, 1961. Homes are located in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Provides benefits assistance, and linkage with the VA, Social Services, Department of Labor, and other services. (SSD) Receiving payment from the VA due to a service-connected illness does not preclude the veteran from also receiving SSD.
