Here on Long Island there are plenty of places to go to visit animals from foreign lands, pet friendly farm animals, and scope out schools of beautiful fish, but when it comes to seeing animals in their natural habitat, nothing beats participating in a seal walk or hike, or seal watching excursion at sea

During the Winter months, many seals make a stop in Long Island waters on their way down from Maine to locate warmer temperatures. Oftentimes they can be spotted soaking up the sun on sand bars, rocks and secluded beaches. There are four types of seals commonly seen during this time on Long island and those are the gray seal, harbor seal, hooded seal and harp seal, with the gray seal and harbor seal being the ones seen predominantly. These sea dogs, as some call them, can weigh a grueling couple hundred pounds each, and have the ability to stay underwater for up to thirty minutes. Wow!
