Long Island was formed during the Ice Ages, approximately 21,000 years ago during the two last pulses of the Wisconsin glaciation. Long Island is now formed by two glacial moraines, known as the Habor Hill moraine, which is exposed as cliffs along portions of the North Shore, and the more southerly Ronkonkoma moraine, which runs through the center of Long Island. The land south of the Long Island Expressway, which roughly coincides with the Ronkonkoma moraine, is a sandy outwash plain created by the last glacier.
