Snow Falls on Long Island, Coastal Flood Warning in Effect

Written by Christian Abbatecola  |  14. December 2013

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood statement, warning that areas of the Long Island coast may flood during the Sunday morning high tide cycle. Tidal departures up to three feet higher than normal high tide levels can be expected.

Yesterday’s Winter Weather Advisory also remains in effect as snow has begun to blanket the Island, and snow is still expected to fall until around 10 PM Saturday night before turning into sleet and rain. Winds up to 30 MPH will be blowing, and several inches of snow will accumulate. A Hazardous Weather Outlook has also been issued by the NWS.

The LIRR has said it has taken measures, including salting station platforms, in order to help keep trains running on schedule, and newer more snow-resistant train cars will be in use.
