Mastic Beach & Moriches, NY - December 12, 2013 - Students at Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School and Moriches Elementary in the William Floyd School District recently participated in college awareness activities designed to get students thinking about college and career readiness earlier in their academic careers.
As part of the college awareness activities, Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School students learned some college vocabulary, including the different types of college degrees and the differences between community and resident students. Students in Kathleen Milano’s first-grade class at Nathaniel Woodhull and Madison Robertson’s third-grade class at Moriches Elementary took online tours of local colleges – St. Joseph’s and NYIT – having an opportunity to virtually explore each of those campuses. Students at Nathaniel Woodhull also thought about the types of career fields that they might like to explore in the future; they also participated in College Spirit Day with students, faculty and staff wearing the colors of their alma maters or their favorite colleges and universities.
“Our goal is to teach our students that going to college and having a prosperous career is an achievable goal,” said Monica Corona, Principal, Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School. William Floyd holds a districtwide College Awareness Week each April, which consists of various college and career readiness activities including hosting a College & Career Fair with representatives from more than 70 colleges, universities and technical schools on hand to talk to students about the programs that they offer.
