Albany, NY - December 7, 2013 - Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff today, in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. In the attack, more than 2,400 Americans were killed, including 40 from New York.

"On Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, I join with all New Yorkers to pause in observance of the 72nd anniversary of the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor and remember those we lost," Governor Cuomo said. "December 7, 1941 was truly a 'date that will live in infamy' that changed the course of our nation's history and propelled the United States into World War II. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I offer my thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of those we lost at Pearl Harbor and thank the service members who continue to protect this country."

Nearly 1.7 million New Yorkers, more than from any other state in the Union, would go on to serve in World War II. Today is a day to honor all of the World War II Veterans but especially those Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and civilians who lost their lives while serving that fateful day at Pearl Harbor. Flags on all state buildings are lowered today to half-staff in tribute to our state's service members and those stationed in New York who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.
