Central Islip, NY - November 22, 2013 - Legislator Rick Montano (D-Brentwood) presented proclamations to recognize the courageous and fearless acts of Daniel (17) and David (14) Ortiz during the General Session meeting of the Suffolk Legislature on Tuesday, November 19th. The young men acted quickly and in true heroic fashion when they saved their neighbors from a fully engaged house fire on Wisconsin Avenue, in North Bay Shore, the morning of November 15th.

Without regard to their personal safety the Ortiz brothers responded to a fully engulfed fire at their neighbor’s house. The brothers witnessed as the fire was destroying the house and became aware of the screams coming from inside the house. The boys immediately jumped into action, when they realized those trapped were too afraid to jump down onto a mattress. They quickly went to their house and grabbed a ladder, which they placed on the second floor window. The quick actions of the Ortiz brothers led them to save the lives of their young neighbors Ryan, 12, and Jaden, 2, along with their mother Dawn Bosque.

“These two young men are a true testament of the people in our community,” Montano said. "Their extraordinary act of heroism is truly commendable.”

Daniel is a tenth grade student at Brentwood Ross High School and David is a student at the Freshman Center. The Brentwood Board of Education will recognize Daniel and David for their heroic action during this evening’s board meeting.
