Driver in Merrick Auto Accident Fled the Scene, Later Arrested for DWI

Merrick, NY - November 18, 2016 - The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Merrick man for Driving While Intoxicated that occurred on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 11:40 pm in Merrick.

According to police, Seventh Precinct Officers responded to an auto accident in front of 1813 Merrick Road.  Upon arrival witnesses stated that a male wearing a black sweatshirt and dark shoulder length hair had fled the scene on foot.  Officers search the area and stopped a male fitting the above description on Alice Street and Beach Street. The subject was observed to have a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his breath and unsteady on his feet.  Defendant Anthony Assabi, 30, of Merrick, was placed under arrest at 12:30 am after witnesses gave a positive identification as the driver of a purple 1993 Chevrolet Caprice, which caused the accident.

Defendant Assabi is being charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. He will be arraigned on Friday, November 18, 2016 at First District Court, Hempstead.
