Man Arrested After Allegedly Impersonating Nassau County Police Officer

A man was arrested in Great Neck after being accused of impersonating an officer. Steve Kleiman, 58, was caught when he honked his horn at and tailgated a woman in his dark colored vehicle.

Nassau County police say Kleiman forced the 43-year-old woman to pull over on Grace Avenue at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. While stopped he blocked her in, got out of his car, flashed a fake badge, and identified himself as a cop. Kleiman then went on to say the woman committed several traffic infractions.

The woman quickly caught on that Kleinman wasn’t an officer and she proceeded to dial 911. After she called the proper authorities, he ran off from her. Kleiman left his car at the scene and attempted to hide in an apartment building. Police found him there and he was arrested.

During the arrest Kleiman complained about being sick and was taken to the hospital.

“I don’t know what to do in this situation”, Great Neck resident Marcy Aharone told CBS news. What are we supposed to do in this situation? I’m not sure.”

Police warn that if you’re being pulled over by an officer and aren’t sure whether it’s legitimate or not, pull into a well-lit public place or police station, and call 911. Once pulled over request photo ID and uniformed backup. Authorities say this kind of response can potentially lead to avoiding a robbery or abduction.

Kleiman was charged with criminal impersonation and has since been released from the hospital. He has pleaded not guilty to a judge and Nassau County police are still determining whether Kleiman is the same man who has been pulling other residents over while impersonating a police officer.
