Moriches, NY - October 16, 2014 - The Moriches Elementary School Garden Group, a club consisting of 28 students in third-, fourth- and fifth-grades, are growing a sustainable garden with Master Farmer Jeff Negron of the Joshua Levine Memorial Foundation and Slow Food East End, organizations designed to promote sustainable gardening practices with students on the east end of Long Island.

Under Farmer Jeff’s guidance, the students planted lettuce and carrot seeds in the new garden located in the school courtyard. Students hope to harvest vegetables in both the Fall and spring seasons and are keeping individual journals about their experiences and the process of growing healthy and nutritious food. The seeds were planted in garden boxes that were constructed by students in Matthew Van Horne's carpentry class at William Floyd High School.
