Glen Cove, NY - October 6, 2016 - Today, Tom Suozzi, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 3rd Congressional district, and former Nassau County Executive and Mayor of Glen Cove, received the endorsements of the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) and the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum (LIEVF).

“I am grateful that the NYLCV and the LIEVF have recognized my proven record of fighting for the environment. Throughout my career I have worked hard to clean up pollution, preserve open space, clean up toxic sites, protect our air and the Long Island Sound, and to ensure our drinking water is clean. I will continue that fight in Congress,” said Suozzi.

“Tom Suozzi has been a true environmental champion of Long Island,” said New York League of Conservation Voters President Marcia Bystryn. “Under his leadership, Nassau made great strides in improving air quality, protecting drinking water, safe guarding open space and expanding the use of renewable energy. Because of his extensive track record, we believe that Tom will be a strong advocate for the environment and sustainability in Congress.”

The Environmental Voters Forum praised Suozzi’s contributions to the environment both as Mayor of Glen Cove and as Nassau County Executive. Among the accomplishments they noted in their endorsement:

  • Implemented the first 50% nitrogen effluent reduction of a waste water treatment plant on the Long Island Sound.
  • Spearheaded a nationally recognized Superfund and Brownfield site cleanup that was formally recognized by then Vice President Al Gore.
  • Passed the $150 million Environmental Bond Act to preserve open space, improve parks, protect water quality and clean-up brown-fields.
  • Developed the County’s comprehensive Clean Air and Energy Action Plan and the County’s Storm Water Management Program.

“The Long Island Environmental Voters Forum is proud to endorse Tom Suozzi in recognition of his record and commitment to environmental protection. We look forward to his continued vigilance of the environment which seems to be under siege in the current Congress,” said LIEVF Executive Director David Reisfield

The 3rd Congressional District covers northern portions of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. The seat is being vacated by Rep. Steve Israel, who announced his retirement from Congress earlier this year. The election is on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
