Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Crash; Driver Arrested for DWI and Leaving the Scene

Suffolk County Police today arrested a Brentwood man for driving while intoxicated after he struck a pedestrian and fled the scene in Central Islip early this morning.

Central Islip, NY - October 10th, 2014 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a Brentwood man for driving while intoxicated after he struck a pedestrian and fled the scene in Central Islip early this morning.

Alejandro Diaz was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck eastbound on Suffolk Avenue, 40 feet east of Bergen Street, at 3:03 a.m. when his vehicle veered off the road and struck Mark Pamphile, who was walking eastbound on the sidewalk. Diaz fled the scene and was arrested a short time later a short distance from the crash.

Pamphile, 22, of Cone Avenue, Central Islip, was transported by ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for serious injuries.

Third Squad detectives charged Diaz, 33, of Crooked Hill Road, with Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Injury. He will be held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on October 11.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
