Fifty-Seven Summonses Issued at Motorcycle Safety Checkpoint

The checkpoint was eastbound on the Long Island Expressway, between Exits 65 and 66 in Yaphank on Sunday, September 28, 2014 from 11:05 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Yaphank, NY - September 29, 2014 - Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol Bureau officers conducted a motorcycle safety checkpoint today on the eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway between exits 65 and 66 in Yaphank.
 
Highway Patrol officers stopped 134 motorcycles between 11:05 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. as they passed through the checkpoint and a total of 57 summonses were issued for the following safety violations:
 
8          Unlicensed Operator
17        Uninspected Motorcycle
4          Uninsured Motorcycle
1          Unregistered Motorcycle
13        Modified/Loud Exhaust System
1          License Plate Improperly Displayed
6          Helmet Not Approved by DoT
4          Driving between marked lanes
1          Disobeying Signs
 
In addition, Robert Russo, 43, of North Babylon, was arrested for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 2nd Degree. He was also issued summonses for Improper U-turn and Pedestrian Walking on the Highway, after he tried to avoid the checkpoint and several other safety violations. Russo’s license had been suspended 17 times. He will be arraigned tomorrow at First District Court in Central Islip.
