Garden City, NY - September 24, 2015 - For five years, Adelphi University has hosted the Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP), a program intended to introduce minority high school juniors to the accounting profession, with the New York Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA), a non-profit organization representing CPAs throughout  New York State.  More than 40 students from the region took part in an informative and intensive five day program to provide a pathway to success in the accounting field. For the affordable price of $30, participants were able to learn about the field of accounting through classes and workshops on Adelphi’s Garden City campus, as well as trips to accounting firms such as Margolin, Winer & Evens, LLP in Garden City and Eisneramper, LLP in Melville.

During the COAP program, Adelphi professors, current students, and recent alumni volunteered to enrich the college campus experience for the participants. Supplementing classes and student discussion panels were valuable opportunities for these students to take part in, everything from an etiquette dinner to a trip to the accounting department of the New York Mets. After the day’s events, the high school juniors stayed in the residence halls on campus to further help them gain life skills outside of the classroom setting. Jack Angel, associate professor in the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, co-chair of the COAP committee and the program’s coordinator, noted that one of the strengths of the program was that Adelphi provides mentors to these high school students and not just classroom instruction.

The COAP program is unique in the service it provides to the surrounding community.  In enabling young men and women to participate in this opportunity without being a financial burden on their families, Adelphi helps set attainable goals of attending college and succeeding in the accounting profession.  Olivia Autry, a senior accounting major who helped with the program noted, “Unlike other programs where participants have to pay an exorbitant amount to attend, the COAP program is only $30, which allows students who come from families with lower income the opportunity to receive a quality education in the accounting field as well as all of the future opportunities it can bring.”
