SCPD Arrest Man Who Fatally Stabbed His Mother and Seriously Injured His Sister

Babylon, NY - September 12, 2014 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a Babylon man who fatally stabbed his mother and seriously injured his sister at their residence in Babylon this morning.
 
First Precinct patrol officers responded to Livingston Ave. at approximately 7:20 a.m. after Kathleen Kearns called 911 to report that she and her mother, Mina Kearns, had been stabbed. 
 
Mina Kearns, 79, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where she was pronounced dead. Kathleen Kearns, 59, was transported to the same hospital with serious injuries.
 
A short time later, First Precinct patrol officers located Joseph Kearns, 33, a short distance from the home and placed him under arrest. Homicide Squad detectives charged Kearns with Murder 2nd Degree and Attempted Murder 2nd Degree. He will be held overnight at the First Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on September 13.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
