The Long Island Primary Election Results Are In

Written by Joe Randazzo  |  12. September 2013

Thomas Suozzi is in the hunt for his old job he held for two terms. The former Nassau County executive won the Democratic primary for a chance to sit in office again. 99 percent of precincts are reporting he won 58 percent of the vote. Suozzi beat out Roslyn School Board member Adam Haber.

The win sets up a rematch between Suozzi and Ed Mangano. Four years ago Suozzi lost to Mangano in a tight race by less than 400 votes. Nassau Democrats were positive he would win that election and left over a million dollars in the war chest because they thought it wasn’t necessary to use. This proved to be a vital mistake as Suozzi was ousted as Nassau County executive.

“Nassau County is America’s first suburb so this is one to watch for everybody even around the country,” Hofstra Political Analyst Lawrence Levy told CBS. “It should be what we used to call barn burner — tough, possibly nasty race.”

In Suffolk County, District Attorney Thomas Spota, who is also running as a Democrat, defeated Raymond Perini in the Republican Primary. He won with over 56 percent of votes. This summer a state court ruled the DA’s office is not subject to term limit laws thus allowing Spota to run again despite being a three-time incumbent.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent Demarco won the Republican primary for sheriff against Samuel Barreto Jr. Demarco won with over 67 percent of the vote and was originally elected sheriff in 2005. Both he and Spota are under the Democratic lines so they will be running unopposed in November’s general election.
