The highest heat index values will occur mainly during the afternoon. * Impacts...the heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure. Extreme heat can cause illness and death among the at-risk population who can not stay cool. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! MTA Provides Service Details for Labor Day Weekend

Extra Getaway Services on Friday, August 29th, Will Start the Weekend.

Manhattan, NY - August 27th, 2014 - MTA railroads will provide extra service on Friday, August 30, to help customers get a head start on the long holiday weekend. All MTA services will operate on reduced schedules on Labor Day. Details are below.

Long Island Rail Road & Metro-North Railroad
The LIRR and Metro-North will provide 27 additional early-afternoon trains from Manhattan on Friday, August 30, for customers planning an early getaway for the Labor Day Weekend. For more information, please see the attached press releases from the LIRR and Metro-North. On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, Metro-North will operate on a Sunday schedule, and the LIRR will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule. 

New York City Subways and Buses
MTA New York City Transit subways and buses and MTA Bus Company buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day, Monday, September 1.  

Because of the J’Ouvert Parade on Monday, September 1, from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Brooklyn, the Church Av 2 Station will be closed and bypassed from 11 p.m. Sunday, August 31, to 4 a.m. Monday, September 1. Buses in the area will be rerouted.  

Because of the West Indian-American Day Parade on Monday, September 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, certain subway entrances in the parade area may be affected and buses in the area will be rerouted.  The Eastern Pakwy- Brooklyn Museum 2, 3, 4 Station will be closed and bypassed from 12 noon to 7 p.m. Monday, September 1. At Crown Hts-Utica Ave 2, 4 Station, certain staircases will be designated entrance/exit only. 4 Trains will make local stops in Brooklyn.  

Staten Island Railway
Staten Island Railway (SIR) customers looking to get a head start on their three-day weekend will be able to catch earlier afternoon express train service on Friday, August 29, with Staten Island Railway’s Early Departure Getaway schedule. This schedule means extra SIR trains will be added earlier in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal. There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every boat until 7:50 p.m. SIR will operate on a Sunday Schedule on Labor Day, Monday September 1. 

The Early Departure Getaway service plan on SIR is also available on the Friday leading into the President’s Day and Memorial Day weekends, the day before Independence Day, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and the day before the Christmas and New Year’s.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels
MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all routine construction and maintenance work at its seven bridges and two tunnels beginning 1 p.m. Friday, August 29, through the end of the morning rush on Tuesday, Sept. 2, to help smooth travel for those hitting the road for the Labor Day weekend. Work will continue at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge where a full-time lane closure is in effect.
