Three People Killed in Medford Two-Car Crash, According to Authorities

Medford, NY - August 15, 2017 - Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a two-car crash that killed three people in Medford on Monday, August 14, 2017 at approximately 4:25 p.m.
 
Dominick Lopez was driving his red 1995 Honda Civic south on Station Road, south of Sills Road, Medford, New York, when he apparently lost control of his vehicle and crossed the double yellow line at approximately 4:25 p.m. The Honda struck a northbound 2016 Nissan Pathfinder. Lopez, 20, of Shirley, New York, and his passenger, Derek Buffa, 23, of Mastic Beach, New York, were ejected from the vehicle. Lopez and Buffa were pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.  A rear passenger in the Nissan, Aida Cardenas, 67, of, Selden, New York, was transported by South Country Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead.
 
The driver of the Pathfinder, Hugo Atiencia, 41, of Bellport, New York, and his wife who was sitting in the front passenger seat, Dianna Arizago, 33, of Bellport, New York, were transported by South Country Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
 
The couple’s 1-year-old-son, a rear passenger in the Nissan, was transported by Medford Volunteer Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The couple’s 11-year-old son, also a rear passenger in the Nissan, was transported by Suffolk Country Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 
 
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing.
