Albany, NY - August 7, 2013 - Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has issued a proclamation designating August 7th as Purple Heart Day. Today marks the 231st anniversary of the Purple Heart Award.
“As the U.S. military’s oldest honor, the Purple Heart medal recognizes the indomitable spirit that characterizes so many members of our armed services,” Governor Cuomo said. “The recipients of this award know first-hand what it means to serve others at great personal sacrifice, and they are an inspiration to all New Yorkers. Designating August 7th as Purple Heart Day in New York State is an important way to commemorate their service.”
The Purple Heart is the U.S. military’s oldest honor, and is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces who is wounded or killed in conflict with an enemy force, or while being held by an enemy force as a prisoner of war.
The Purple Heart medal was established on August 7, 1782 by General George Washington from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York. Today, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located nearby in New Windsor and is dedicated to preserving and commemorating the stories of Purple Heart recipients from all branches of service.
