Legislator Anker Participates in Annual Backpack Pirate Program

Mt. Sinai, NY, July 2013 - Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker is asking community residents to donate school supplies to help children succeed in the coming school year.

The annual Backpack Pirates campaign facilitated by Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, collects school supplies for nearly 1,000 children in need.  The items collected will be distributed to children from area homeless shelters and foster care families at the “Backpack Pirates Summer Festival” held on August 27 in Riverhead.  

"There are so many children in Suffolk County who attend school without the basic necessities for learning and achieving academic success,” said Legislator Anker. “Please help this worthy cause by donating supplies.”

Suggested supplies include the following:

  •  Elmer’s School Glue & glue sticks
  • Children’s Scissors
  • Folders w/pockets
  • Baby Wipes
  • Ziploc bags (sandwich & gallon)
  • Tissues
  • Large T-shirts for smocks
  • Sharpened #2 pencils
  • Crayons
  • Pencil boxes
  • Wide ruled B&W notebooks
  • Plastic shoe boxes
  •  Erasable pens

Supplies can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. at the Legislator’s office at 620 Route 25A, Suite B, Mt. Sinai.  The deadline for donations is Friday, August 23.
