Former Suffolk County Lawmaker to be Arraigned in Riverhead Today

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  12. July 2017

Suffolk County, NY - July 12, 2017 - Former Suffolk County Legislator George O. Guldi whose conviction on grand larceny and insurance fraud charges was overturned by an appellate court last week will be arraigned in Riverhead today (Wednesday 7/12), Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

“The appellate court reversed the convictions but the charges remain and we are considering our options,” District Attorney Spota said.

The insurance firm American International Group (AIG) paid $863,473.30 by check for the 2008 loss of Guldi’s Westhampton Beach home. It was alleged that Guldi stole the funds from Countrywide Home Loans and deposited them into his bank account.

Convicted by a jury of grand larceny in the second degree and insurance fraud in the third degree, the former county lawmaker, who turned 64 today, was sentenced in 2011 to serve three to nine years imprisonment on the grand larceny conviction and one to three years imprisonment on the insurance fraud charge to be served consecutively.

The appellate court found the judge erred by not dismissing a prospective juror who worked for AIG.

Guldi will be arraigned Wednesday (7/12) by State Supreme Court Justice Mark Cohen (fourth floor in the courthouse). The calendar call begins at 9:30 am.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
