Body of Amityville Man Found in Great South Bay, According to Suffolk Officials

Copiague, NY - July 10, 2017 - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a man who was found in the Great South Bay approximately one mile south of Copiague, New York, on Sunday, July 09, 2017 at approximately 3:05 p.m.
 
A boater observed there was a man floating in the water, approximately one mile south of Tanner Park in Copiague, New York, and notified police. A Copiague Fire Department boat responded and recovered the man and transported him to Tanner Park in Copiague, New York. Suffolk County Police found an empty 17 foot clamming boat nearby.
 
The man, Joseph Unger, 57, of Amityville, New York, was pronounced dead by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
 
An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
 
The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with additional information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
