This week may very well become the first official heat wave of the summer for Long Island. After a relatively comfortable holiday weekend temperatures have shot up into the high 80s and low 90s, and Thursday will be no exception. Highs between 87° and 89° are expected around the Island with some areas potentially breaking into 90° territory. Coupled with significant humidity, it may feel closer to the high 90s at times.

Showers and possible thunderstorms are expected later in the day, starting as early as 2 PM in western Nassau and closer to 4 PM in Suffolk. The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Nassau, particularly in low lying and poor drainage areas.

Friday
Don't expect the rain to cool the region off too much, however. Lows are expected to remain in the mid 70s overnight, and Friday will see temperatures jump right back up into the 90s with a high of 93° expected near Glen Cove, 91° near Commack, and 90° near Riverhead. Though it should be a sunny day more rain and thunder could occur overnight, mainly after sundown, as the NWS predicts a 50-60% chance of heavy rain.

Saturday
The precipitation and possible thunder could carry over into Saturday, which will be mostly cloudy and a bit cooler with highs around 85°. A slight possibility of rain remains for Saturday night and temperatures could dip back down into the high 60s for the first time in days overnight.

Sunday
Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny with highs in the low 80s. Lows should hover around 66° and a partly cloudy night will give way to a mostly sunny Monday.
