Two Sisters and Mother Rescued from Drowning at Smith Point Park

Two Marine Bureau officers, along with Good Samaritans, rescued two girls and their mother from possible drowning at Smith Point Park beach this evening.

Mastic Beach, NY - July 6, 2015 - Two Marine Bureau officers, along with Good Samaritans, rescued two girls and their mother from possible drowning at Smith Point Park beach this evening.

Marine Bureau officers Chris DeFeo and Ray Harkins were on patrol at the Smith Point Park pavilion in a Marine Bureau police vehicle when a man approached the officers.  The man indicated that he heard people screaming in the water in front of the TWA Flight 800 International Memorial at approximately 8 p.m. The officers ran to the beach and observed two girls approximately 75 to 100 yards in the water, struggling to stay afloat.  The girls were flailing their arms and appeared to be caught in the riptide. As the officers approached, a male relative was already in the water.  Approximately 75 yards from the shore, the relative reached 15-year-old Adreina Collado and brought her to safety.  Officer DeFeo jumped into the water and rescued 11-year-old Jairiamy Collado who was approximately 100 yards from shore. As the girls were being carried to out of the water, their mother, Nancy Collado, 42,entered the ocean and was in waist deep water when she became unconscious.  A male beachgoer rescued the mother and brought her to shore.

The three victims, who reside on Robinwood Drive in Mastic Beach, were transported Mastic Beach Ambulance transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and for observation.
