The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a dense fog advisory, which is in effect until 11 am EST this morning. * Visibilities...one quarter mile or less. * Timing...until 11 a.M. * Impacts...hazardous driving conditions due to reduce visibility. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be reduced to one quarter mile or less. If driving...slow down...use your low beam headlights...and leave plenty of distance ahead of you in case a sudden stop is needed. 12 , "Special Statement" ...Areas of dense fog tonight... South winds continue to transport unusually mild and moist air north across the area as high pressure moves out to sea. Areas of fog will continue developing and become locally dense, restricting visibilities to 1/4 mile or less mainly from New York City north and east across southern Connecticut and Long Island. This fog is forecast to persist through Saturday morning. Motorists should be alert while driving into rapidly reduced visibilities. Bellone Urges Mature Residents to Sign Up For Free Fitness Classes

Falls prevention workshops scheduled for July/August.

West Islip, NY - June 23, 2014 - County Executive Steve Bellone and Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken, MD, MPH, invite mature residents to attend workshops focused on preventing falls. The programs aim to empower mature adults to carry out behaviors that reduce the risks of falls and improve their quality of life.
 
‘Stepping On’
‘Stepping On,’ is a seven-week model program that focuses on  improving balance and strength, home and community safety, vision, safe footwear and medication review. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the program has proven to reduce the number of falls for participants by 31 percent.
