Written by Long Island News & PR  |  18. June 2014

New York, NY - June 18, 2014 - Learn about our money-saving getaway deals at Long Island Rail Road’s Summer Kick-off Event on Wednesday, June 18, at Penn Station (34th Street-7th Avenue corridor entrance) from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Representatives from some of the best summer destinations on Long Island, including surfers and lifeguards from Long Beach, will be on hand to remind you of the abundance of fun summer activities that can be reached easily via the LIRR. Whether you’re looking to go to Fire Island, Jones Beach, Splish Splash, Long Beach, Montauk or the Hamptons, there are plenty of money-saving LIRR deals and packages available. “Long Island has some of the most desirable beaches in the world. And the LIRR can get you where you want to go while saving you time and money,” said LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski.

“Coming out to Long Island on the Long Island Rail Road is a wonderful way to travel and it’s quick and easy. There are several stops in or near tourist destinations and most times if you let your hotel or B&B know, they’ll pick you up at the station. Otherwise, it’s a quick cab ride,” said Kristen Matejka, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Long Island Convention Visitors Bureau.

This year’s kick-off event at Penn Station features exhibitors from the New York Mets, the Long Island Convention Visitors Bureau (LICVB), NY Cosmos soccer club and the city of Long Beach.

“Long Beach draws thousands of visitors each summer from New York City and from other parts of Long Island and we’ve been working closely with the LIRR to make sure visitors know that one of the best ways to get to Long Beach is via the LIRR. The LIRR Station puts you just steps away from the beach and the boardwalk,” said Long Beach City Councilman Anthony Eramo.

"This year will be special in Long Beach for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that this will be our first full summer where our residents and visitors can access our brand-new 2.2-mile oceanfront boardwalk that runs adjacent to our beautiful 3.5-mile beach,” Eramo said.

The special Long Beach package fare is $22.00 from New York and Brooklyn, and $18.75 from Jamaica. Hourly service is available from Penn Station, Brooklyn and Jamaica with direct weekend service from Penn Station. LIRR weekday service begins June 21 and continues through Labor Day, September 1.

The LIRR offers other beach packages including Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Captree Fishing and eight Fire Island beaches. For more information on Beach Getaways, visit  here.

In addition to the many informative tables and displays, this year’s attendees at Penn Station can enjoy pretzels and lemonade from Auntie Anne’s or smoothies from Jamba Juice. There’s also a chance to win prizes on the big wheel or in raffle drawings -- including tickets to a NY Cosmos or NY Lizards game, a Broadway show, Gray Line sightseeing tour and more.
