In Wake of Toxic Dumping, Residents to Hold Vigil at Roberto Clemente Park
Brentwood, NY - June 17, 2014 - In response to the closure of Roberto Clemente Park following the dumping of 50,000 tons of asbestos-ridden waste at the park, and other dumping at nearby sites, Brentwood and Central Islip residents will hold a vigil at the park entrance.
Residents from Make the Road New York, New York Communities for Change, and other community organizations will join together to mourn for their closed park and demand that the Town of Islip, which has been unresponsive thus far, do the following:
- Clean up Roberto Clemente Park and other nearby parks as soon as possible;
- Hold all responsible accountable;
- Allocate funds for free summer youth programs for all affected areas; and
- Keep all residents informed in all languages spoken by local residents.
