Bayport Car Crash That Overturned and Caught on Fire Kills Driver

Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a single-car crash that killed a man in Bayport today.

Bayport, NY - June 14, 2015 - Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a single-car crash that killed a man in Bayport today.

Michael Schuierer was driving his 1970 Jeep eastbound on Sunrise Service Road, just west of Nicolls Road, when he lost control of the vehicle at approximately 12:15 p.m.  The Jeep overturned and then caught on fire. Two good Samaritans attempted to extricate Schuierer from the vehicle but were not able to before they were overwhelmed by the flames.

Schuierer, 49, of East Patchogue, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

The Jeep was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
