Calverton, NY - May 30, 2017 - The Calverton man arrested for pouring a flammable liquid on his girlfriend and setting her on fire pleaded not guilty to an eight count indictment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

Ryan Osborne is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, arson in the first and second degrees, two counts of assault in the second degree, aggravated criminal contempt and two counts of criminal contempt in the second degree.

The criminal contempt charges stem from Osborne’s alleged violation of a permanent order of protection issued in January of 2016 directing Osborne to stay away from the woman.

According to police Osborne and the woman, who is homeless and was living in a tent in a wooded area near Osborne’s house, had an argument the day prior to the incident.  On the evening of May 17, the defendant allegedly poured a flammable liquid into a mesh opening of the tent where she was sleeping and set the tent ablaze.

With her legs on fire, the victim was able to dive out of the tent and roll on the ground to extinguish the flames. She told police she saw Osborne running away from the scene.

The 33 year old female suffered burns to her legs, face and hands.

Following the arraignment, Judge Martin Efman remanded Osborne, 30, to the county jail without bail.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
