Wading River, NY, May 2013 – On Sunday, May 19, Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Wading River community in celebration of Duck Pond Day. The celebration, held annually by the Wading River-Shoreham Chamber of Commerce, began with a 5k race in the morning, followed by a parade in the afternoon, and display booths set up by local business owners. This year’s Duck Pond Day was also a special event for the three centurions who were recognized, Bea Sweeney, Irv Meyer, and Roy Laine.

“Duck Pond Day is a wonderful event,” said Legislator Anker. “It’s a day that allows different groups to come together and celebrate the unique character of the community.”

Duck Pond Day was started by the local civic associations as a part of the coastal cleanup effort, with members of the community working to restore the pond. After the work was done, volunteers and families would relax and enjoy a picnic lunch. After the a few years of cleanups, a parade was added to the day’s agenda, and Duck Pond Day soon became a full day of festivities and celebration.
