Rocky Point, NY - May 21, 2015 - Legislator Sarah Anker attended a celebration of the North Shore Youth Council (NSYC) Big Buddy/Little Buddy and Volunteer Celebration at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point on May 11. Students, program coordinators, parents and school administrators were recognized for their dedication to the Big Buddy/Little Buddy program, as well as for the program’s many achievements.

“I was so happy to be a part of this celebration honoring the Big Buddy/Little Buddy program, and I thank the North Shore Youth Program for its excellent job in organizing this event and maintaining such a wonderful community program,” said Legislator Sarah Anker.

The Big Buddy/Little Buddy program in the Rocky Point School District is a cross-age mentoring program whereby younger students are matched with high school volunteers for support and guidance. “Big Buddies” provide “Little Buddies” with positive role models and encourage motivation for school performance. Together, the buddies work on homework and participate in recreational activities such as social and community living skills. The “Big Buddies” are responsible and committed to being positive role models and to helping their “Little Buddies” gain meaningful experiences throughout their high school years.
