Glen Cove, NY - May 19th, 2014 - The Long Island Academy of Fine Art is pleased to announce its upcoming Young Artist Summer Program, running weekly from June 23 through August 29.  The camp is open to students aged 8 to 13, runs Monday through Friday, 9:30am to 3pm, and is located at 14A Glen Street, Suite 201, Glen Cove, NY.

  • August 25-August 29:  Batik Week

Students have the unique opportunity to learn classical techniques rarely available to their age group.  Every morning students work on projects that improve drawing and painting skills and expose them to a variety of 2D media.  For the afternoon sessions, each week focuses on a different theme, listed above, that allows students to delve into art forms and materials with other art professionals who come to share their particular area of expertise, such as ceramics, paper and fiber arts.

“Beginners are welcome—encouraged, in fact,” says Co-Director Rebecca Forster.  “We believe that every child and adult can learn how to draw, given the right environment.  What drives us at LIAFA is not the number of students we have, but the quality and depth of education we offer and our passion for art.  We intentionally keep our classes small so that our teachers have time to give each student individualized attention and guidance.”

This summer’s program is led by professional artist and experienced youth instructor Diana Corvelle.  “Diana has been a tremendous asset to LIAFA’s Young Artist Program,” says Forster.  “She brings the best out of the students with energy and a caring spirit.”

Diana was born and raised on Long Island, New York. She completed her BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design, and recently earned her MFA in Drawing from the New York Academy of Art. Her work has been shown at galleries in South Carolina, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York, most recently at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Outside of her education, Diana has focused on ways in which she can involve her community in the arts, such as her mural work for the Rockville Centre Public Library and initiating a still-life drawing workshop for adult residents at a domestic violence shelter in Boston where she was a longtime volunteer.

Each session is limited to only 10 students.  Discounts are available for registrations of three or more weeks and for siblings who register together.  The cost per 5-day week is $495, and materials are provided.  For registration and information, call Rebecca Forster at 516-590-4324.

The Long Island Academy of Fine Art is dedicated to the advancement of classical art for students of all ages and experience levels.  LIAFA also offers adult classes and a High School Portfolio Development program.  Visit www.liafa.com for more information.
