Man Arrested After Hit and Run Crash that Seriously Injured a Pedestrian

Bay Shore, NY - May 16th, 2014 - Suffolk County Police have arrested an Islip Terrace man that left the scene of a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a pedestrian in Bay Shore yesterday.

James Vaughn was attempting to cross Fifth Avenue at Howells Road when he was struck by a 1998 Ford pickup truck at approximately 4 p.m.  The driver of the Ford left the scene of the crash.

Vaughn, 18, of Bay Shore, suffered a serious head injury and broken bones.  He was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was in stable condition.

A Third Precinct police officer located the Ford and arrested the driver, Alfred Buckman, 51, of 14 Lorigan St., Islip Terrace. Third Squad detectives charged Buckman with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Involving Serious Physical Injury Without Reporting, a Felony, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator 2nd Degree, Uninsured Vehicle, Unregistered Vehicle, Uninspected Vehicle and Two Counts Failing to Stop At A Steady Red Signal.

Buckman will be held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on May 16.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
