PSEG LI Refrigerator Recycling Sweepstakes to End May 15

Written by Christian Abbatecola  |  06. May 2014

As part of LIPA and PSEG Long Island’s continuing energy efficient appliance rebate program, LI residents with old, still-functioning refrigerators and freezers are eligible to receive a $50 rebate for having PSEG pickup and recycle their aging fridges. Those who schedule a pickup by May 15 will also be put in a drawing to win one of two free Kindle Fire tablets as an added bonus.

In order to qualify, appliances must be between 10 and 30 cubic feet and operational. PSEG requires that the units be plugged in and cooling when their recycling pick-up crew comes to take them away, and they must have been manufactured prior to 2006. A limit of two rebates per customer per year is in place, and checks will be mailed within four weeks of pickup.

Additionally, customers can arrange to have working air conditioners and dehumidifiers collected for recycling while they have their old fridge or freezer removed. PSEG will issue a $30 online credit voucher for up to three such appliances, which will be emailed after collection.

The program is ideal for any Long Island residents who have old secondary or unused fridges taking up space in their basements or garages, and for those looking for a new refrigerator it can also be used in conjunction with another mail-in rebate on Energy Star certified appliances. Under this program, fridges larger than 16 cubic feet qualify for a $40 rebate when purchased, and those that are deemed “Most Efficient” (models that consume less than 481 kWh per year and are 30% more efficient than non-Energy Star units) will net their purchasers $75. The Energy Star mail-in rebate program is presently valid through December 31, 2014.
