Coast Guard Suspends Search for missing NY Boater

New York, NY - May 5, 2014 - The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing New York boater, today.
 
At 8:10 a.m., a Coast Guard boatcrew recovered the body of Ciro Stellges, near Duck Point, N.Y.  
 
Coast Guard and local agencies launched a massive search for Stellges Sunday after the Riverhead Police Department notified Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, that they received a call from an individual aboard a sailing vessel stating it was taking on water approximately three miles north of Jacobs Point.
 
"On behalf of the men and women of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends affected by this tragedy.  Our thoughts are with them in their time of grief.  We appreciate the support of local port partners in our aggressive search and rescue efforts.  Response crews worked tirelessly and covered an enormous search area to locate Mr. Stellges.”
 
In total, rescue crews searched for more than 19 hours, covering more than 400 square miles, to locate the missing boater.
 
Involved in the search were:
  • An MH-60 helicopter rescue crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod
  • A rescue crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Tiger Shark, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Newport, R.I.
  • A 45-foot rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New Haven
  • A 45-foot rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New London
  • Suffolk County Police Marine and Air division
  • Riverhead Police Department
  • Wading River Police Department
  • Southold Police Department
