Bay Shore, NY - May 4th, 2014 - Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued two men that became stranded in the Great South Bay for nearly 30 hours in a newly purchased sailboat.
Luis Cosme, 39, and Jose Llanos, 46, purchased a sailboat in Bay Shore yesterday at 3 p.m. and set sail for City Island located in the Bronx. At approximately 4:30 p.m. yesterday, the men ran the 1981 24 foot Tanze sailboat aground, approximately 1000 feet west of Elder Island in Copiague. A resident that lives across from Elder Island noticed the stranded boat and called police today at approximately 4 p.m. Aviation Section officers responded and located the marooned sailboat. Marine Bureau Officers Pete Conte, Gerard Legoff and Robert Jenkins responded to the location in Marine Juliet and rescued the men off the boat at approximately 7 p.m.
Cosme and Llanos, who are both from the Bronx, were treated at the scene for exposure by Copiague Fire Department rescue.
