SCPD Announce Two Men Arrested Following Holtsville Burglary; Two Officers Injured

Holtsville, NY - May 4, 2017 - Suffolk County Police arrested two people in connection with a burglary that occurred at a home in Holtsville on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at approximately 12:05 a.m. 
 
Police responded to a 911 call reporting a burglary at a residence on Morris Ave. at approximately 12:05 a.m. While fleeing the scene of the burglary, Robert Lathan intentionally drove his 2015 Chevrolet Equinox into a responding police car.
 
“[The owner of the home] was able to call 9-1-1 and ... by the time the perps were leaving, our police were there, and we were able to take the individuals into custody,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said.
 
Lathan, 29, of Patchogue, was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 1st Degree, Burglary 2nd Degree, Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree and Resisting Arrest.
 
Another man, Miguel Ruiz, who was sought for questioning at the scene of the burglary, fled the area on foot. He was located in a nearby yard by a Canine Section officer and his canine partner. Ruiz was bitten by the police dog while he was attempting to flee.
 
Ruiz, 24, of Mastic, was charged with Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree.
 
The police officer who was driving the police car that was struck was not injured. Two police officers were injured while taking Lathan into custody.
 
There were four people in the home at the time of the burglary and no one was injured. The individuals involved are known to one another.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
