Freeport Man Arrested for Scamming Car Buyers at Nassau Dealerships

Roslyn, NY - April 22nd, 2015 - The Major Case Bureau reports the details of an arrest for Grand Larceny that occurred in Roslyn and Westbury from 2012 to 2014.

According to the Crime Against Property detectives, defendant Michael McGriff, 41, of Forest Avenue, Freeport, was employed as a sales agent for Port Motors – 1036 Northern Boulevard and Auto Galleria – 500 Old Country Road, Westbury. The defendant made at least 27 separate contracts with customers to purchase motor vehicles. The defendant would receive US currency as down payments for the vehicles, but would keep the money for his own personal gain.  

The defendant would further alter credit applications stating that the customers gave a lower down payment amount and or the customers made a higher salary.  Port Motors experienced a loss in excess of $170,000 while Auto Galleria suffered a loss in excess of $5000.

After an investigation by the Crime Against Property Squad in conjunction with the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office defendant McGriff was arrested on April 21, 2015 at 7:55 am in East Garden City without further incident.

Defendant McGriff is being charged with six (6) counts of Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree, Falsifying Business Records 1st Degree, Defraud and Violation of Probation. He is currently hospitalized for a prior medical condition and will be arraigned as soon as medically practical.
